Twinning approach
Twinning between organisations Finland/South and South/South, as relevant for the capacities of the farmers’ organisation. FFD’s twinning approach is flexible, professional and results-oriented. FFD matches the capacity needs or the farmers’ organisation with the expertise of the twinning organisation in Finland or in another developing country, on the basis of jointly identified value chain bottlenecks. FFD trains the twinning partners in result-based management, organizational capacity development, gender, climate and value chain development. Furthermore, staff in FFD ensures the quality.
Quality assurance in the agriculture value chain management
FFD with twinning partners provide quality assurance expertise trough national and international network deliver affordable services together with local partner in target country. Our local FO partner, TAHA, has established relations with farmers, government authorities and trade organizations and capabilities to build trust between the parties. It has expertise in farming, adequate financial resources and organizational capabilities to obtain and apply new skills and information. Together TAHA, FFD and twinning partner have already arranged training in farming skills and technology in Zanzibar. Tools/guidelines include Quality standards as a guideline, GAPs, Risk Assessments, Self-Assessments, Digital and mobile applications for documentation and data handling.
Organizational Development
FFD trains the twinning partners in cooperation for development. Staff in FFD has the knowledge to guide the process. Manuals/expertise available on for example Leadership Management, Organizational Capacity Assessment Tool, Results Based Management, Knowledge management and networking. The objective of this service is strengthened capacity of the farmer’s organisations at organizational level and in providing services to their members. FO:s are made aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and are enhanced to possess the knowledge on how to improve their capacity in different fields, on various levels.
Climate Service: Enhancing Adaptive Capacity, Resilience and Mitigation Outcomes
This service follows the twinning approach umbrella service. Furthermore, it follows the application of value chain development. It can be applied in parallel to the institutional development and the Gender service which provide a solid, longer term framework for the provision of specific know-how and favors participation in climate related issues
The Climate Service has been applied in Africa, Asia and Latin America. FFD has worked for enhancing adaptation capacities and building resilience e.g. in Zanzibar focusing on water management in horticulture, and in Nepal and Ethiopia through integrated land-use systems. The mitigation service has been implemented in Vietnam (carbon sequestration potential of smallholder plantations) and in Nicaragua (calculation of carbon footprint for selected products).
Tools/guidelines include Participatory climate change risk screening and vulnerability analysis, Calculation of carbon footprint according to recognized principles (e.g. ISO standards, WRI, GHG Protocol, PAS), Carbon footprint reporting framework.
Sustainable Forestry Value Chain Development
FFD has strong experience in forest value chain development and a network of forest expert twinning partners supporting the forestry activities. Market-orientation, knowledge of forest ecology and sustainable forest management, and experience in efficient forest, market and remote sensing data management systems are key competences required for development of profitable and resilient forestry operations. Familiarity of forest certification, due diligence systems, and legal framework are needed to secure the sustainability and market share by long run.
Tools/guidelines include Guidelines and manuals for sustainable forest management, logistical chains, chain of custody, and forest certification, GIS, Market surveys, Forest management plan – model, Data bases including forest data base, market data base, Context specific technical solutions.
Aquaculture Value Chain Development
FFD trains the twinning partners in cooperation for development, the twinning partner is the aquaculture expert. Tools/guidelines include Access to inputs, land and natural resources, Climate-smart aquaculture, Training on Good Aquaculture Practices, Training on Disaster Risk Reduction and utilisation of Early Warning Systems using simple technological tools, Post- harvest and logistics advisory, Supply and demand chain management, Good Hygiene Management and HACCP o Certification and quality systems, Market Access, Gender value chain management.
